Judith P. Hriceniak Memorial Scholarship Fund

In Memory of Judith P. Hriceniak, RN, PhD
Nursing Leader, Educator, Mentor to Many

The Connecticut Nurses’ Foundation has established a memorial Scholarship fund in honor of Judith P. Hriceniak, PhD, RN who died on October 6, 2000.
CNF sponsors an annual walk to sustain the funds in this scholarship and to promote the health of the public by exercise.

The Connecticut nursing community lost Dr. Judith Hriceniak on October 6, 2000. Dr. Hriceniak (Judy), chairperson of the Department of Health and Human Services at Central Connecticut State University, was a past president of Connecticut Nurses’ Association and the 1990 recipient of the Diamond Jubilee Award, the Josephine A. Dolan Award for Outstanding Contributions to Nursing Education.

Judy received many prestigious awards and was recognized by many organizations. Most recently she was honored posthumously on October 16, 2000 by CURE, Connecticut’s BioScience Cluster, as a CURE Fellow for her service to the board of directors, the executive committee and her leadership in healthcare and nursing. Whenever Judy participated in an organization she gave fully of her many talents.

For many Connecticut nurses, Judy was a mentor. Because of this relationship those nurses enjoyed greater career success, advancement and satisfaction. They grew because she listened carefully and had a unique way of reframing our questions or concerns so we not only solved the problem but we learned. She expected all to reach higher and deeper as she did in her pursuits.

Through her work as educator she influenced nurses throughout Connecticut. She encouraged her students to reach a different level of professional behavior and knowledge. Her challenges to them were many – be lifelong learners, be politically active to help set policy that will be good for nursing and patients, develop your leadership skills – for yourself, your patients and your colleagues.

As a role model Judy was one of our most influential contemporary nursing role models. She worked tirelessly on behalf of nurses and nursing in Connecticut. Through her participation on many statewide task forces and coalitions and her work in a number of professional organizations her presence was felt with her clear thinking and leadership skills. She was competent, intelligent, energetic and organized.

As a caring and thoughtful woman, Judy made sure she sent the cards for all occasions, wrote the letters of congratulations on colleagues’ accomplishments and nominated many for special awards. Although she was busy and involved, her door was always open to hear the concerns of her students and colleagues.

Her vitality and concern for the practice of nursing is felt in most places where Connecticut’s nurses work. She leaves us with an incredible legacy. Her words, her mentoring and her love will help us to carry on her caring and know that she will always be with us. She will be missed by her family, her friends, and her many nursing colleagues.
