Thank you to all those who ran, walked, donated and came to support the 6th Annual GE 5K Road Race, benefiting the Petit Family Foundation. A portion of the proceeds go to support the Jennifer Hawke-Petit Pediatric Scholarship, given annually by the Connecticut Nurses Foundation to deserving students in the state of Connecticut.

The Petit Family Foundation honors the memories of Jennifer Hawke-Petit, Hayley Elizabeth Petit and Michaela Rose Petit but continuing the kindness, idealism, and activism that defined their lives. The Foundation’s funds are given to foster the education of young people, especially women in the sciences; to improve the lives of those affected by chronic illnesses, and to support efforts to protect and help those affected by violence.

The Connecticut Nurses Foundation is proud to continue the legacy of Jennifer Hawke-Petit by awarding her memorial scholarship annually to deserving students throughout the state of Connecticut and are honored to continue to collaborate with the Petit Family Foundation.

Each year, CNF is proud to join with the nursing community at the Connecticut Nurses’ Association’s Legislative Day in Hartford. The day is focused on nursing students and starting advocacy at the bedside, empowering nurses to advocate for themselves and their professions. CNF, in its mission to support and promote nurses and nursing, strives to help nurses find their voices and ensure the future of nursing and healthcare in the state of Connecticut.

Rising Costs of Diabetes

In 2012, diabetes cost the United States over $245 billion according to a report from the American Diabetes Association, a figure that represents a 41% increase from 2007. The ADA also reported that medical costs for people diagnosed with diabetes are 2.3 times higher than those without.

CNF awarded 12 scholarships on Oct. 18, 2012 to students from 9 different universities.  They are as follows:

General Nursing Scholarship to Gabriella Yambo of Manchester attending  Goodwin College in East Hartford;  Brother Frances Smith Award to Lori Rupp of Madison attending Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing;  Frank Chant Jr. Memorial Scholarship to Briana Zink of Plainville attending Quinnipiac University class of 2016 and Melissa Arsenault of Middletown attending Central Connecticut State University class of 2013;  Continuity of Care Scholarship to Monique Mickens of New Britain attending the University of Saint Joseph class of 2013;  Jennifer Hawke-Petit Memorial Scholarship to Emily Baldwin of Seymour and Danielle Brouillard of Hampton Falls, NH, both attending Fairfield University;  Polly Barey Tribute Scholarship to Angela Julian of Seymour attending Yale University class of 2015; Judith Hriceniak Scholarship to Lisa Solari of Newington attending Central Connecticut State University class of 2014 and Catherine Nesci of Madison attending the University of Saint Joseph class of 2015;  Research Grant Award to Linda Mascola of Derby attending Sacred Heart University for her DNP;  and the Sheila Packard Scholarship to Alison Moriarty Daley of East Hampton attending UConn for a PhD in Nursing.
